Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger Point Therapy involves applying specific pressure to a localized knot in a muscle or to other areas that may be affected by the knotted tissue. Often, a knot within the muscle tissue can elicit pain elsewhere in the body. In some cases the knotted muscle is too sensitive to apply firm pressure as would be the case in deep tissue work. It may become necessary to apply pressure to other areas nearby to aid in release of the knot.
It is unclear how or why this technique works, but many therapists and chiropractors find it a useful tool in combating particularly stubborn or sensitive knots.
There are many well-known trigger points on the body. Some coincide with acupressure points. A skilled therapist will often find a trigger point far away from the source of the pain.
